Standard SIM

What is a standard SIM card?

The SIM card is that of the mobile phone. Without a standard SIM card, we would not be able to make phone calls, surf the internet or even write messages. The card is the link between the smartphone, tablet, smartwatch and the mobile phone provider. It is the only way to access network services - and of course with many other devices. There are different formats so that the card can cope with the desired functions and ever newer devices.

Change SIM-Cards: How does it work?

Standard SIM cards are products that wear out over time and do not have an unlimited lifespan. The lifespan decreases each time the card registers in the mobile network. According to the manufacturers, you can log on to the network up to 100,000 times with older SIM cards, and even 500,000 to one million times with newer cards. But what should I bear in mind when I have to insert a new card into my device? Here are a few tips:

Basic information about the standard SIM

When the SIM card is changed, data such as contacts and photos are not automatically transferred. This is only possible if the card was previously saved as a storage location.

Back up data before swapping

For this reason, a data backup should be made before changing the SIM card. There are various options for this. Either you save the data digitally in a cloud via a backup, or you take a portable hard drive to transfer the desired data. Some smartphone models even offer wireless transfer of the information, provided the manufacturer is not changed. And numerous apps for data backup can be found on the market. But beware: here, too, data is only stored on the phone, unless otherwise defined. Since an open point is created during transmission, this is a weak point for misuse.

The topic of security therefore seems to be a particularly big challenge for the field of IoT and will continue to develop extensively in the future. Research and development are continuously working to uncover security gaps and develop solutions to close them. But the hurdle is high. Fast-moving technologies and rising levels of cyber-crime mean that the demands are growing.

A few steps to your goal

1. Changing the SIM card on a smartphone with a removable back cover

First, of course, the device must be switched off and the casing removed. Now you have a view of the inner workings - the card is usually located under the battery. To be able to change it, the battery must be removed.

2. Insert SIM card in model with card slot

The size of the card may vary, so check which SIM card format is suitable for you. Insert the card in the designated place, replace the battery and switch on the unit.

If the process is too risky for you or sounds too complicated, you can of course always consult a professional. A SIM card is often changed directly on site and usually only costs a few euros.

SIM card compatibility

In principle, you can use any SIM card for any device these days. The standard SIM cards, which are virtually no longer used, all offer the possibility of cutting out the appropriate mini-SIM, thanks to the corresponding punching. With a template, you can cut a mini-SIM into a micro-SIM, just as you can make a nano-SIM out of a micro-SIM. Of the eight contact surfaces of the actual chip, two are merely reserves and therefore have no function, so cutting them out is relatively easy.

What to do if the format is too large? Have you been using a mobile phone with a standard SIM and are switching to a newer one? Then you need a smaller SIM card size that you can have cut to size. It is important to make sure that the chip is not damaged. Punching out is a better option. You can buy the appropriate tools or go to a mobile phone shop.

SIM card adapter: The right hardware

You have a nano or micro SIM and want to put it in a mobile phone that is only suitable for larger card formats? Then simply use an adapter. You can usually buy these in sets of different sizes.

Find the right size and insert your SIM card. Make sure that it sits as firmly as possible in the adapter. This will prevent it from sliding around or even falling out.

TIP: If you need a different SIM card format, you can order it. You will receive the appropriate size within a few days. If you don't want a SIM card at all - or if the housing of your device can't be opened - it could be that your device is already equipped with an eSIM. What is it? The latest generation of SIM cards. The successor to the standard SIM card

The innovative SIM card format not only makes your everyday mobile life more convenient, but also opens up new possibilities. The eSIM allows you to use your Smartwatch without your smartphone. Leave it at home if you want to make phone calls, check emails or surf the Internet while you're on the move. All this and more is easy via your Smartwatch - thanks to the new SIM card format.

The eSIM as evolution

Until now, the card standard has been an external solution that you insert into your mobile device yourself. But technical progress provides an innovative variant: the eSIM eSIM.
This is a special SIM card format. It is already permanently integrated in smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets and does not have to be replaced when switching providers. This solves the problem of different SIM card formats in a convenient way.

The "embedded SIM" is installed in the device and can be recorded with data from outside. In this way, the most important information about your mobile phone tariff is transferred to your device. If you change the tariff or the provider, the previous data is deleted and the new data is loaded. This is easily done via an access profile and an activation code.
